Sibu 1 (ex-Seamull) was sailing west about 136 nm east of Al Mukalla when boarded and redirected toward Somalia. The ship operates under a claimed Eritrean flag assessed as false in commercial registries and remains on the U.S. OFAC sanctions list for prior Iranian product trades. The confirmation eases immediate crew-casualty fears but does not end the hostage and vessel-recovery problem as Somali piracy incidents climb again in 2026.
