CENTCOM Hits Iranian Tankers Downy and Stark 1, Destroys Kylo After IRGC Missile Attack

On 5 September 2026, US Central Command announced retaliatory strikes against three Iranian crude oil tankers after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles toward US Navy warships. CENTCOM said it permanently disabled M/T Downy off Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and completely destroyed the unladen M/T Kylo (also reported as Noxen) in the Gulf of Oman after directing the crew to abandon ship. Admiral Brad Cooper framed the response as imposing a higher economic cost: three Iranian tankers for missiles fired at two US ships.

Audio and video circulating with the events showed US aircraft issuing radio warnings before firing, including a timed warning to Stark 1 to clear the stern. Iranian agencies earlier reported a tanker hit by multiple projectiles near Kharg without confirming the full CENTCOM account. Critically for commercial geography, the Downy strike pushed US tanker-targeting deep into the northern Gulf near Iran’s main oil-export hub, not only the Hormuz/Jask approaches.

Merchant shipping should read this as a widening battlespace. Even vessels with no IRGC affiliation face higher misidentification, exclusion-zone and collateral risk when naval forces strike tankers near Kharg, Jask and the Gulf of Oman in the same day. AIS discipline, nationality signalling and UKMTO reporting become more — not less — important.

What Operators Should Note

  • Expand high-risk geography beyond Hormuz TSS to include Kharg approaches and Jask/Gulf of Oman.
  • Expect rapid US–Iran tanker tit-for-tat cycles after IRGC strikes on naval units.
  • Keep bridge teams primed for military radio warnings and immediate compliance manoeuvres.
  • Re-screen any residual Iran-linked employment for secondary sanctions and kinetic exposure.
  • Update crisis plans for abandon-ship and missile-warning scenarios in the northern Gulf.

Regulas Shipping will track CENTCOM and Iranian follow-on actions affecting commercial tanker safety near Kharg and Jask.
