Security analysis of the Somali basin shows LUTUF (IMO 9109134), a Cameroon-flagged general cargo ship boarded by at least eight armed men about 4.5 nm south of Mareeyo on 17 August, forming part of a consolidating Puntland holding cluster. By mid-August imagery, multiple dark seized vessels — including tanker ASANA taken in July — sat within roughly 130 kilometres along the Garacad–Eyl coastline.
LUTUF is the fifth vessel taken since April 21, with well over 40 seafarers assessed held across the group. Operation Atalanta is investigating. The pattern indicates a single holding operation rather than isolated one-off attacks, raising the stakes for any Gulf of Aden transit already pressured by the Sibu 1 hijacking.
