United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported early on 18 August 2026 that a vessel conducting an outbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unknown projectile, damaging the engine room and resulting in a crew casualty. UKMTO classified the event as an attack under Warning 115-26.
The vessel’s Company Security Officer reported the strike. Remaining crew are being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard. UKMTO did not identify the ship, flag or cargo in its initial advisory and said no environmental impact had been reported. Authorities are investigating. Reporting places the incident in the vicinity of Khasab, Oman.
Engine-Room Hits Remain the Pattern
The strike lands days after JMIC documented three commercial vessels attacked in Hormuz over a 72-hour window on 14–15 August, and as weekend tracking showed Hormuz traffic near standstill. Engine-room damage has been a recurring feature of recent projectile incidents, raising immediate propulsion-loss risk in a narrow chokepoint.
UKMTO advised vessels to transit with caution and report suspicious activity. The attack also coincides with the expiry of a U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at easing hostilities around the waterway, keeping commercial risk elevated for any residual movements.
