Notices issued by clubs including Skuld and West of England P&I take effect from 00:01 GMT on 16 August 2026, leaving owners and charterers with a narrow window to reassess fixtures, routing and alternative cover.

Skuld said it received a reinsurer cancellation for certain commercially reinsured war risks and passed a matching notice to fixed-premium assureds — including fixed P&I, charterers, offshore, yacht and optional covers where war risks are extended. The club said the notice replaces earlier war-risk terms, including a general notice from 17 February 2026, and applies to war risks only. Mutual P&I and FD&D cover, and Excess War Risks attached to mutual P&I, are not affected by the Skuld notice.

Where Cover Ends

From 16 August, war-risk cover for affected assureds automatically terminates for trading to, from, through, or within territorial waters inside a mapped Red Sea–Gulf of Aden–Indian Ocean zone. Boundaries cited by the clubs run south of Latitude 25°30’N in the Red Sea, then through specified high-seas points east and south toward Somalia — with a coastal-waters exception up to 12 nautical miles that expressly does not spare the Bab el-Mandeb Traffic Separation Scheme, the Saudi Red Sea coast inside the box, or the Yemeni coast.

West of England likewise reported a reinsurer notice of cancellation and immediate reinstatement for war-risks liabilities in the same waters, applying from 16 August to non-mutual business such as charterers’ liability, fixed-premium owners cover, non-poolable extensions and fixed-premium P&I. Other insurers issued similar cancellation notices around 12 August.

What Operators Should Note

Check every war-risk endorsement before 16 August — automatic termination can leave a voyage mid-corridor uncovered overnight.

Do not assume coastal-waters carve-outs protect Bab el-Mandeb or Yemen/Saudi Red Sea coasts inside the defined box.

Separate mutual P&I from fixed-premium and charterers’ war extensions; the Skuld notice hits the latter hardest.

Build replacement cover, diversions or layup options into commercial decisions now, while underwriters are still answering the phone.

The cancellations turn recent kinetic risk into an immediate insurance and regulatory-compliance problem: a ship may still be free to sail, but no longer free to sail with the war cover its charter party and lenders expect. RegulAs Shipping will monitor further club circulars and any reinstatement terms as the 16 August deadline approaches.

Skuld, West of England and other marine insurers are cancelling war-risk cover for Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and defined Indian Ocean waters from 16 August 2026 after reinsurer notices driven by escalating attacks.

[20,4,6

post-445","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-maritime-regulations","category-maritime-security","category-regulatory-updates
["GET
